14- November 2010 cholera epidemic

The cholera epidemic that started in Artibonite around Mirebalais killed several hundred people in a few weeks. A Nepalese contingent of UN forces recently arrived from Nepal, where in August of this year there was a cholera epidemic in the city of Nepalgunj, not to mention the epidemics in 2009 and where cholera has never been eradicated , is at the origin of this disaster. The contamination was probably generated by the irresponsible discharge of water containing faeces into a stream flowing in the Artibonite River. Cholera had disappeared in Haiti more than one hundred (100) years ago. The number of victims was approximately 4,627 deaths, 248,442 infected people treated and 133,921 hospitalized as of February 25, 2011.
