Transatlantic genocide
Slavery
Is it possible to be Caribbean especially Black Caribbean and not talk about slavery? After all, it may only be 150 years since these events happened. By comparison, Jews were freed from Egyptian slavery around 3,450 years ago and they still talk about it.
This experience shaped and still influences this people. So we have to put aside, the argument of some that we should not mention this tragedy again, because somehow it might no longer be relevant. It is irrelevant to cry about this; the time for mourning has passed. It is irrelevant to bemoan this point; the need for lamentation has long since disappeared. This past tragedy is no longer a valid argument to justify our failures; the time to apologize for the failures present has evaporated.
However, it is of paramount importance not only to remember what has been reported that happened, but to know and understand what really happened. There is a huge difference between the two levels.
